Grinding rest
My bench grinder is a cheap combined grinder and linisher that was purchased from Aldi. Like most other cheap Chinese grinders the grinding rest supplied was basic and made from flimsy steel pressed parts.
A new grinder rest was made that is much more sturdy than the original that permits the height and angle of the rest to be adjusted. It also wraps around the grinding wheel and this provides better support for some operations.

The parts of the rest can be seen in this photo. Two tapped M8 holes were provided in the guard for attachment of the original rest. A slotted bar is bolted to the guard using the tapped holes. The slot permits the whole rest to be moved in and out from the grinding wheel. The slotted bar is attached to another slotted bar, nearly vertical in the photo, that carries the table of the grinding rest. The slot in this bar enables the height of the table to be adjusted. The table is attached to this slotted bar and it can swivel about the attachment screw to facilitate setting the angle of the rest.
The first slotted bar is made from 4 x 20 mm steel bar. It was slotted 8 mm for most of its length. At one end is a tapped M6 hole.
The second slotted bar is also made from 4 x 20 mm steel bar. It is slotted 6 mm for most of its length and a 6 mm hole drilled at the end for attachment of the table.
The slotted bar attaches to a block of steel 10 x 20 x 53mm. The block is tapped M6 at one end for the fixing screw.
The table attaches to the block using M5 screws.

The table is made from 6 mm steel plate. This was cut to shape using hacksaw, drill and file. Note the M5 screws attaching the block to the table.
The top of the table is scribed with lines at 10 degree intervals as a guide when grinding angles.
For more precise angle grinding, such as for threading bits a grinding jig, as shown here, can be used in conjustion with the rest.

This simple rest is very easy to make, is much more sturdy and is much more flexible for setting height, angle, and position than the original.
