Spindle extension.
One of the most unsatisfactory features of the lathe is that the end of the spindle is inside the gear cover. This means that swarf can travel back along the spindle and drop out of the spindle onto the change gears immediately below. This problem is greatest during boring operations. The problem was solved by removing one of the spindle locking rings and replacing it with a combined locking ring and spindle extension. The dark ring on the extension shows where it rubs slightly on the change gear cover. All the swarf now falls outside the cover.
The extension was machined from a piece of 50 mm round bar. The bore of the extension is 20 mm to match the bore of the spindle. The rear of the extension is threaded M27 x 1.5 mm to match the locking ring thread
