Foundry
Important safety information.
Foundry work is potentially very hazardous. Apart from the dangers of handling hot items, molten metal presents other dangers. If spilt directly onto concrete in quantity the concrete may explode. When pouring metal there is always the danger of the metal spitting or bubbling that could throw molten metal in any direction. All equipment should be dry since contact of molten metal with water can result in a steam explosion. Protective clothing should be worn. This should include thick clothing made from non synthetic materials, a leather apron, a full face mask, welding gauntlets and a cap. The cap should be loose so that it can be removed immediately i.e. not a close fitting knitted hat. Prepare the site so that everything is to hand. If in an enclosed building ensure there is a safe, unobstructed exit. Gas fired furnaces can produce carbon monoxide, if the burner is badly adjusted, so ensure good ventilation. Place gas bottles and other inflammables well away from the furnace.
